Adult bed wetting is a common problem as you can see from all the TV ads about bedwetting disposable diapers available for adults. The first thing for adults to do when they have a bed-wetting problem is to consult with a doctor to make sure that there is nothing medically wrong to cause this problem to develop. Bedwetting in the adult years can be a symptom of diabetes, kidney or bladder problems or something as simple as a urinary tract infection, for which there are antibiotics. Even though disposable diapers do help adults feel more comfortable, adult bed wetting does need to be checked out.

Allergies, cell anemia, and sleep disorders are also causes for adult bed wetting. Researchers dealing with this problem have also found psychological factors to be involved, such as stress and trauma. In some cases, age is the culprit as the muscles of the bladder start to lose their elasticity causing adult bed-wetting. Enuresis alarms work just as well for adults as they do for children and teenagers. These alarms wake you up out of your sleep at the first sign of moisture so that you do have time to get to the bathroom instead of wetting the bed.

There are medications that have proven effective in controlling adult bed wetting. One of these is DDAVP, which helps to reduce the amount of urine that the body makes at night. Adults who drink a lot of liquids may have to use the bathroom more at night and if they take medication for insomnia, then they might find it hard to wake up when they need to. This medication helps to treat the symptoms of adult bed-wetting, which means that you will not urinate as often during the night. However, this is not a cure for adult bedwetting. It is mainly a measure to control it. Once you stop taking the medication, bedwetting will start again.

You do not necessarily need to take DDAVP every day in order for it to control adult bed wetting. You can either take this as pill or a spray, but a cold or a stuffy nose is likely to interfere with the action of the medication taken in spray form. You do have to take the medication at night and it does have side effects, which some adults are unable to handle. The common side effects of this adult bedwetting medication include headache, nausea, sinus problems and nosebleeds. When you are taking this medication you are not allowed to drink any water after taking it.

For adults, Imipramine is an anti-depressant drug that has been found effective in treating adult bed wetting. Like DDAVP, this reduces the amount of urine the body produces during the night. However, most doctors do not like to prescribe this medication because of its many side effects. In fact prescribing medication for adult bedwetting is usually the last resort. Doctors prefer to try methods of behavior modification first and if the adult is comfortable, disposable diapers keep the bed sheets dry at night. Adult bed wetting is a problem that doctors are well used to dealing with, so there is no need for embarrassment when deciding to talk to a doctor about your problem.

Sleep, the period of rest to the mind and body, is divided into a number of stages. Wondering what the stages of sleep are? Then read on…

Someone has said, “Blessed is the person who is too busy to worry in the daytime and too sleepy to worry at night.” That is so very true! Indeed, sleep is bliss. A night’s sleep is a break from the stress of daily life. Sleep may sometimes even act as a solution to some of the problems by helping your brain think in peace and solve serious problems. Naps are definite stress busters. It is during your sleep that you dream, you dream of wonderful things that may not come into reality; but your dreams show them to you. It is during sleep, that you get an opportunity to be with yourself, far away from the real world. You get to meet your subconscious as your sleep takes you away from your conscious self.

Sleep is a natural phenomenon of the state of rest and regular sleep is essential for survival. Interestingly, its true purpose is still being researched. Researchers have not yet obtained conclusive results about the exact purposes of sleep. Moreover, it is interesting to observe, that our sleep undergoes a series of stages. Yes, we sleep in stages. Sometimes we do realize the different forms of sleep in the various stages of sleep, while at other times, the distinction is unclear.

Stages of Sleep

According to the basic classification of the various stages of sleep, sleep is grouped into two distinct stages, namely, REM and NREM. REM sleep is characterized by a rapid movement of the eyes, as also a very low muscle tone that is typically seen in mammals. Most of the dreams that you remember after awakening from sleep, are those occurring in the REM stage of sleep.

The NREM, which is known as the non-REM sleep, is composed of four different stages. A comparatively lesser amount of dreaming occurs during this stage of sleep. Movements of limbs or even sleepwalking are observed during the non-REM stage of sleep. The four stages of the NREM sleep are simply named as N1, N2, N3 and N4. Let us look at each stage of the non-REM sleep in detail.

Stage N1: This stage of sleep can be called as the phase of drowsy sleep, during which you may experience hallucinations and sudden twitches. It is during this stage that you may lose your muscle tone and your conscious awareness. This stage of sleep is characterized by the brain transitions from alpha waves to theta waves and is primarily the stage when sleep starts laying her hands on you!

Stage N2: During this stage of sleep, muscular activity further reduces and the awareness of the external environment vanishes. Sleep spindles, the bursts of brain activity during which the brain tries to stop processing, characterize the N2 stage. Briefly, this stage of sleep is when the brain succumbs to the sleep that had begun to lay her hands on you.

Stage N3: Walking in sleep or sudden feelings of terror when asleep, commonly occur during this stage of sleep. Bed-wetting may also take place during this stage. The stage N3 is mostly only the transition to the fourth stage. It is one of the phases of a very deep sleep. This is the stage wherein the sleep begins to engulf your brain.

Stage N4: It is a stage of an even deeper form of sleep as compared to the third stage. According to some researchers, the third and the forth stages of sleep can be combined and together called as delta sleep. This is when you are fast asleep, far away in the world of sleep.

For me, sleep opens doors to the world of dreams, to the world of meeting yourself, the world that is away from the bitter truths of life. A sound sleep is cloud nine!

Evaluate how much of a problem bedwetting is in your family and how often it happens. Frequent bedwetting that causes many tears and embarrassment or even arguments in your household may need more aggressive treatment than bedwetting that occurs once in a while and results in only some extra laundry.

<g:plusone size="Medium" count="true" href="http://womenwettingthebed.com/a-evaluating-the-bedwetting-problem" ></g:plusone>

Different Types of Bedwetting Demand Different Approaches

Also, be sure to differentiate between primary and secondary Enuresis. Primary nocturnal Enuresis is almost never caused by an underlying medical problem. Secondary nocturnal Enuresis means that a child has had control of his or her bladder but has begun wetting the bed.

In these cases, it is especially important to have the child seen by a good pediatrician, as almost all cases of secondary Enuresis are caused by an underlying problem (psychological or physical) and so responds very well to treatment.

Make it Less Stressful
Once you have evaluated the bedwetting in your household, you can develop a plan of action. Since you will be learning many tips that you can apply to your plan in your research, your plan here is basically a contingency plan. On paper, write down what your child should do when he or she wets the bed.

Ideally, your child should contact you, and then you should take steps to clean up. Share the plan with your child so that when an accident happens, your child can put the plan into action rather than being ashamed and trying to get your attention.

There are also a few things you can do to make bedwetting less stressful. Putting special sheets on your child’s bed, for example, can make clean-up much easier. Keeping extra sheets and blankets by your child’s room can also make clean-up much faster, especially in a busy household. Even small things you can do to make bedwetting less stressful will allow you and your child to focus on resolving the problem rather than worry about clean up.

Reality Check

Consider whether there really is a problem. Although we often expect kids to grow up fast today, the fact is that occasional bedwetting up to age three is still considered ‘normal’ by most experts – children at this age are still simply learning to do basic things like use the washroom and control their bladder. Even kids up to age five may have an occasional bed wetting ‘accident’ and this should not be a cause for concern. Many experts consider children over five who wet the bed regularly to have nocturnal Enuresis. In many cases, this condition tends to run in families and can last well into teenage years.

Before you start worrying unduly about bedwetting, consider the age of your child. If your child is very young, it may simply take a few months or a year to resolve the issue. Many children have nighttime accidents until they are five or even older. If your child is older (six, seven, or older), consider whether anyone else in the family suffered from similar bedwetting problems in childhood. Was there something that helped? Sometimes, just seeing Enuresis as a childhood ailment or a condition in the family that is always resolved eventually can help soothe the frazzled parent and the embarrassed child.

You need to consider the frequency of problems as well. A child who wets the bed after watching a scary movie or before a big day may be less worrisome than the older child who does not seem to be able to sleep through a dry night.

One of the best things that you can do when you have a female bladder problem is to learn all that you can about it and how to help yourself deal with it or get rid of it. You need to do some research to find out what you need to know. Having a female bladder problem can be embarrassing. However, it doesn’t have to stop you from living a full life. Information is power when it comes to any kind of problem.
What is a bladder problem? This is when you have sudden urge to go to the bathroom and you are leaking urine and having frequent urination urges. These are all forms of what is known as a urinary incontinence. What this means is that you have a lack of bladder control. There are many things that can cause this. However, the most common cause is a gradual weakening of the pelvic nerves. There are a couple of different kinds of incontinence.

Stress incontinence is when there is a weakening of the pelvic floor, which will result in pressure (or stress) on a bladder that was fully functional before. You can be laughing, sneezing, coughing and the next thing you know your underwear is wet. This happens with greater regularity in women after menopause.

Urge incontinence or overactive bladder also known as OAB is a sudden, uncontrollable need to go to the bathroom. It doesn’t matter how long ago it was that you last went. It could have been just 15 minutes ago. It is caused by the uncontrolled contractions of the bladder muscle also known as the detrusor. This occurs when the communication between the bladder and the brain is not right. This type of bladder problem happens because of inflammation of the bladder lining, infection, and injury, natural atrophy (this happens as you get older) and other reasons.

Sometimes you can have a combination of the two above bladder problem types, which is then considered to be a mixed incontinence.

Overflow incontinence is when you can’t get rid of all of the urine that is in your bladder due to a muscle tone that is weak or there is some type of blockage. The symptoms for this can include dribbling, urgency, hesitancy, straining, a weak urine stream or low urine production even though you feel like your bladder is full. This problem is more common in men but it can happen in women.

The first step you will need to take when you have some type of bladder problem is to seek the advice of your physician. If your problem stems from a bladder infection then he will prescribe an antibiotic. Bladder infections will rarely go away on its own and can lead to more serious problems with the urethra, bladder, and the kidneys. Your physician will also need to rule out any more serious problems prior to starting any type of home remedy.

The Kegel exercises is a good way to strength the pelvic muscles to help with female bladder problem. Read my article on Adult Bladder Control Problem to get a detail description on the Kegel exercise.

Did you know that almost 20 percent of women have suffered from bladder infections or cystitis? And 80 percent of those 20 percent have suffered from it more than once. So what is this bladder infection or cystitis that so many women and sometimes men suffer from?

What is a bladder infection?
A bladder infection is also called cystitis; it is most commonly defined as an inflammation of the bladder because of bacteria or a virus. Most forms of bladder infection or cystitis is because of bacteria, the most common being Escherichia Coli. Though a bladder infection is a minor problem, if it isn’t checked and controlled it can spread upwards to the kidneys, where it can become a serious issue. The reason women suffer from a bladder infection more often than men is because they have shorter urethras, which makes them more susceptible to infections than men.
Bladder infections are categorized into simple infection and complicated infection. Simple bladder infections are those that plague healthy women with normal urinary systems. Men who are healthy yet suffer from bladder infections are considered in the complicated infection category.

More about simple bladder infections
Simple bladder infections occur when the bacteria travels into the bladder, this is more common in women because of the structure of the women’s urinary system. The reason women are more susceptible is also because of the proximity of the rectum to the urethra. Sexually active women are also more prone to bladder infections as the bacteria are more likely to get pushed up into the bladder during intercourse.

More about complicated bladder infections
The reason these are called complicated bladder infection is because these are abnormalities in the urinary system, which makes the infection, complicated to treat. Men are more susceptible to these infections and they are more complicated for them as their urethra is longer and give time for the infection to become complicated by the time it reaches the bladder. The most common reason for a complicated bladder infection among men is an enlarged prostate.

Bladder Infection Symptoms
Symptoms of simple bladder infection:

Need to urinate very often, and the urination occurs in small quantities.

Sudden and abrupt need to urinate.

Pain, discomfort and burning sensation while urinating.

Frequent need to urinate at night.

Pain or discomfort in the lower abdominal region.

Traces of blood in the urine.

Cloudy and smelly urine.

In case of a child, bed-wetting could be the only symptom, as they have lesser control on their bladders.

Symptoms of Complicated bladder infection:

Burning or pain while urinating.

Excessive need to urinate and sometimes in small quantities.

Odor and cloudy urine.

In case of severe infection, fever and chills.

Some people even suffer from nausea and vomiting.

Pain in the flank and back or lover abdomen.

Blood in the urine.

Dealing with a bladder infection isn’t difficult; it can be sorted out with antibiotics. There are some ways to prevent it as well; the first step is to take care of hygiene and being healthy.

Adult bedwetting is as embarrassing to adults as it is to teenagers. No one wants to admit that he/she has a bedwetting problem, but doctors see adults on a daily basis that suffer from enuresis. This is the name given to bed wetting in anyone over the age of five because by that time most children have learned to recognize the signs that they need to get out of bed to use the bathroom. Even at that age, they become very upset by bedwetting, so you can only imagine how anyone with an adult bedwetting problem must feel.

Whether adult bedwetting occurs suddenly or develops gradually, it is something that needs to be checked out by a doctor. It could be a symptom of a disease such as diabetes, a sleep disorder, an infection in the urinary system or even an allergy. Once the doctor runs the necessary tests, he/she may send you to a urologist as a precautionary measure. During this time, you can wear bedwetting diapers to keep dry during the night, especially while you are waiting for the medication to take effect. Adult bed wetting also responds well to enuresis alarms to wake you up in time to go to the bathroom.

Adult bedwetting is often result of aging and the loss of muscle tone in the walls of the bladder. There are exercises you can do to reduce the occurrences of adult enuresis. These include doing such things as squeezing the bladder several times a day. This process helps to strengthen the bladder muscles because you pretend that you are trying to stop urinating. It also works during the day when you go to the bathroom so that you are actually stopping the flow. This is one method of exercise that adults suffering from nocturnal enuresis have found effective.
If your adult bedwetting occurs occasionally, you should start a diary recording the events surrounding the bed wetting episodes. This should include such things as how much you had to drink before you went to bed and what foods you ate. Drinking too much alcohol is often responsible for adult bed wetting because it puts you into a deep sleep. Since alcohol impairs brain function, the connection between the brain and the bladder is severed so bed wetting is more likely.

One factor to look at as a cause of adult bedwetting is the psychological factor. Stress and trauma can bring on bedwetting in an adult who did not even wet the bed as a child. This is where keeping a diary of events leading up to the adult enuresis episodes can help you determine what is causing them. Once you realize a pattern in stressful events and adult bedwetting, then you can take steps to avoid certain things that bring it on.

Your Best Friend Just Might Be A Bedwetting Alarm

<g:plusone size="Medium" count="true" href="http://womenwettingthebed.com/the-bed-wetting-alarm-your-best-friend" ></g:plusone>

Imagine the despair felt by a parent who goes into a child’s bedroom nearly every morning, only to find that everything around the child is soaking wet-the child wet the bed. Again. The fact is, thousands of parents recognize this as their reality. The good news, though, is that a bedwetting alarm can make this a distant memory.

The first thing to note is that there is no defect in parenting, as many mothers and fathers undoubtedly feel. Don’t neglect the fact that the child probably feels just as badly as you do about the situation. There is obviously an underlying cause for the problem, and the remedy that works for many is a bedwetting alarm.

For some reason, most kids who are chronic bedwetters do not receive the brain signal from the bladder that causes most everyone else to waken and head to the bathroom. So a bedwetting alarm that is attached in two places-a sensor near the point of urination and a speaker attached near the shoulder-causes the brain to receive the missed signal.

Now, the alarm probably won’t wake the child from a deep slumber, which is how most chronic bedwetters sleep. Instead, the signal to stop urinating occurs subconsciously, while the alarm will probably wake the parents, who can then rouse the sleeper and lead him or her to the bathroom to finish up. With continued use, the child will eventually connect the signals with being woken, and will then start to wake up on their own, with out parental intervention.

Obviously, the fact that these children don’t wake up, like most people do when their bladders have reached maximum capacity, is the real problem. Actually, full bladders during sleep hours are not exactly normal, anyway.

Using the bedwetting alarm is an effective tool, and it should happen in conjunction with some other measures. For instance, limiting fluid intake during the two to three hours leading to bedtime is sometimes sufficient enough. So too can be the elimination of any caffeine from a child’s diet. Caffeine has the effect of drawing fluids from the body and into the bladder for elimination, and it is particularly harmful to children, in that it can actually lead to dehydration.

Regardless of the cause of your child wetting the bed, a bedwetting alarm can, in just about twelve weeks, eliminate the problem altogether. From the most basic to the most elaborate, bedwetting alarms are widely available and can help you and your child get back to normalcy.

An overactive bladder is the sudden contraction of the muscular walls of the bladder, causing one to have the urgent need to want to urine.
It is a very embarrassing condition, and those who have it may become withdrawn and isolated. However if you visit a doctor they can determine the cause of your incontinence and start you on an over active bladder treatment. This may greatly relieve the symptoms and help you better cope with your daily life.

* often or frequent urination.

* an involuntary loss of urine.

* getting up in the middle of the night to urinate 2 or more times.

* urinating more than 8 times in a 24 hour day.

* Rashes in the pelvic region.

The causes may be-

* Psychological.

* Their may be domestic problems at home.

* Recent child birth.

* You may be dealing with a sudden loss that you finding hard to accept.

* Their may be a problem in your urinary tract such as the pelvic muscles no longer holding the bladder in place which can lead to an over active bladder.

* Damaged caused by accident.

* Diseases such as cancer.

* Some type of abdomen surgery.

* Old age.

If you are experiencing any of the above conditions you may need over active bladder treatment. Your doctor might recommend, an over active bladder treatment for you depending on your capabilities and current health.

You may receive rehabilitation of the pelvic muscles, to strengthen the muscles and prevent leakages or lost of control. This could be the over active bladder treatment for you. It includes-

* Kegel exercises- Is a regular daily exercise of the pelvic muscles by contracting and then relaxing the muscles. This is a common exercise practiced by pregnant women.

* Vaginal weight training – This is where small weights are held within the vagina by tightening the vagina muscles.

* Medication – You can be treated with medication such as Ditropan or Detrol. This is as easy as getting your doctor to write a prescription.

* Surgery – If your bladder control problem stems from your bladder slipping out of place in your body then surgery may be able to correct the problem.

* Using catheters – For sever bladder control problems the treatment of last resort is the use of catheters. Bladder infections are very common with this treatment and care must be taken to prevent them.

Another form of over active bladder treatment is Behaviour therapies. This is to help people regain control over their bladder by teaching them to avoid the urge to go constantly to the toilet. This is done by gradually extending the intervals between urinating.

No matter what over active bladder treatment you receive, prevention is best. So one should try to live a healthy lifestyle, with regular exercise, a good balanced diet, and limit your intake of coffee and alcoholic beverages. This could greatly help reduce the risk of getting an over active bladder.

Bedwetting diapers are not just for infants and babies. They come in sizes all the way up to adult so that any one with a bed wetting problem can feel secure that he/she will not wake up to wet sheets in the morning. Along with ensuring you or your child a dry night, wearing diapers at night means you also have less mess to clean up. These diapers are disposable, so they won’t add to your mounds of laundry. Actually, disposable bedwetting diapers will cut down on the amount of laundry that you have to do because you will no longer have to wash bedclothes each day.

Even with having bedwetting diapers for your child, you still have to pursue other methods for treating the problem of bed wetting. These diapers can give the child or adult a false sense of relief and not really do anything to help the problem at all. If there is a medical reason for the bedwetting, you know that using bed wetting diapers will probably be only a temporary measure. If there is no medical reason, then you need to combine using an adult bed wetting diaper each night with a method of behavior modification such as using an enuresis alarm to wake the wearer at the first sign of moisture.

There are bedwetting diapers that look just like underpants. This makes it much easier for your child to sleep at a friend’s house without anyone knowing about the bedwetting. These diapers have an absorbent liner that soaks up the urine and does not let it seep through to the pyjamas or the bedclothes. However, if the child is in bed for a long time, there is the possibility that some of the urine will seep out through the legs of the diapers causing an accident. The top layer of plastic on a bedwetting diaper helps to keep the moisture away from the skin.

You do have to be aware of the cost involved in using larger size disposable bedwetting diapers. This is why you do need to look for treatments that will not only reduce the number of bedwetting episodes, but will help cure the problem. There are child and adult bed wetting diapers that you can get that are reusable. This type of diaper is a cheaper alternative to the disposable bed wetting diaper. It also comes like a pair of underpants or a liner that fits on the underpants. With these adult bedwetting diapers, the person still feels wet, but the wetness does not seep through to the clothing. The wetness helps to wake the adult up so he/she can go to the bathroom.

You do have to choose the best bedwetting diapers for your child. Look at the liners, diapers and absorbent underpants to determine which one would best meet the needs of the child or adult. Liners are strips of absorbent material that have a sticky side that adheres to the underpants, thus keeping them in place. They are not noticeable and will not irritate the skin in the same way as some bedwetting diapers will.

Kegel exercises are unheard of by many women and yet they may benefit women’s health in a variety of ways. What are they? Kegel exercises are designed to strengthen all the muscles that support your urethra, bladder, uterus and rectum.

In the 1940′s, Dr. Arnold Kegel, a gynecologist, recommended these exercises for his patients to avoid stress incontinence after childbirth. Thus, the name, Kegel exercises persists today.

It is not just after childbirth, but lifelong, that women often have problems with stress incontinence.

There are other reasons for doing Kegel exercises as they increase circulation to your vaginal and rectal areas. For women who are pregnant, Kegel exercises can speed healing from an episiotomy done during childbirth. Also, Kegel exercises can reduce the chance of developing hemorrhoids from childbirth.

A Kegel exercise consists of a squeezing and lifting action of your vaginal wall muscles. While doing a Kegel exercise, do not tighten your tummy, buttocks or leg muscles. Hold the Kegel exercise for about 10 seconds then relax for a few seconds.

Kegel exercises should be done in sets of ten, three or four times during the day. When you first start, just do a few at a time, several times a day, then work your way up to sets of ten.

Kegel exercises will assist a pregnant woman to have an easier delivery as the pelvic floor muscles will be more toned. The likelihood of tearing during delivery will be reduced.

While sitting on the toilet, try to stop the flow of your urine in midstream. This is a variation of the Kegel exercise that is very powerful, and can really be a convenient way to do the exercise, completely privately. If you can do this, these muscles are in good condition. If not, try doing Kegel exercises, and you will see a difference.

Here’s another way to think of and visualize the Kegel exercise, envision it as “winking” your vagina, if you will”winking” your vagina. Positioning in various ways while doing Kegel exercises can further tone your pelvic floor. Try doing Kegel exercises while lying down, sitting up, squatting and on all fours.

Kegel exercises can help women at other times in life than just while they are pregnant. They can make sex with your partner more enjoyable at any time, not just during the postpartum phase.

Kegel exercises can help women of all ages reduce the risk of prolapsed uterus, stress incontinence, overactive bladder and unsatisfactory orgasm. If you perform these simple, discreet exercises, you, like other women who do kegel exercises regularly, may come to report better and stronger orgasms as well and be one of the “lucky ones” who can more easily achieve orgasm, a somewhat elusive creature for some women.

Later in life, after menopause, Kegel exercises done as a routine from midlife on, can increase vaginal wall thickness and lubrication. Think the urinary benefit is good enough alone to start Kegels? Well, Kegels also are known to help prevent rectal incontinence, which can be an even worse and more embarrassing problem than urinary incontinence.

It will usually take about 3 or 4 weeks to see an improvement in stress incontinence from a routine of Kegel exercises.

One behavioral approach uses biofeedback to teach women exercises to strengthen the muscles involved with bladder and urinary control.

Many times, doctors will recommend that female incontinence sufferers try Kegel exercises.
